Presence, a condition to which only humanity can operatively aspire. We are not present automatically, only during rare moments of intense self-awareness. Both through recognition of abstract icons and spatial interpretation are individuals able to achieve an awareness of themselves within time and space. Intense self-awareness can also be attained through the performance of ritual. Prescribed performative acts center our focus on the object in question, present thought, or occupying space. Working with multiple media, I have found that Printmaking fosters the highest level of opportunity for examining these curiosities. Printmaking is a mode of making that utilizes ritual at its fundamental core. The constant reevaluation of this complex relationship between ritual presence, awareness, and meaning is necessary, and has become the conceptual and metaphysical crux of my work. It requires patients, dedication, and trust through undoubted failure.
