I discovered Oaxacan alebrijes, brightly colored wood carved animals, in my twenties.  Forty years later, I have a collection built through my own acquisitions and gifts.  These fantastical creatures, from the minds of their artists, are often colorful, joyous, and primal. By contrast, graffiti that I view on my subway rides are often expressed in dark tones and somehow primal in its messaging.  I thought often about the artists who create these alebrijes. One wrong carve, means a new creature. The graffiti artists, cannot make mistakes either.  Speed is probably paramount. As a watercolorist, I too work in a medium that is often unforgiving.  Thus, 'Taming Monsters' is created. The Monsters represent our mediums that are Tamed in our dreams.
