Lisa Hendrickson

I hope the art I create challenges viewers to see life from a different point of view, to visually experience new processes and materials, and to better understand marginalized groups. Community volunteer work often informs my art practice, resulting in pieces that raise awareness about the societal issues of homelessness, gun violence, and gender equality. Using unconventional, often discarded materials like cardboard, newsprint, paper bags, and cork, I paint intimate, personal portraits of people experiencing life struggles, challenging the traditional concepts of beauty. Heavily influenced by human expression and the importance of eye contact, my work strives to capture the emotion of the moment, inviting viewers to examine their compassion and connection to those facing adversity. The subject matter often drives which material and processes are used, creating the foundation and mood for the artwork’s story by incorporating items such as a newspaper article, a map, or a letter.
