William Lewis

I studied sculpture at UCLA and was a member of the minimalist sculpture school of LA in the 60s. After military service during Viet Nam, I stepped away from art and spent a career doing national fire and emergency services training.   After retiring in 2010, I enthusiastically returned to  art, but enjoy now the intimacy of drawing rather than sculpture. I work today primarily in colored pencil and AD marker with some other media mixed in, and I confess to having become very retro in my artistic tastes now - my art heroes today are really from the past. I am especially awed by the wonderful work done by the many talented artists of the golden age of illustration and their beautiful and charming figure work. The subjects of my drawings are people and animals engaged in life’s challenges. The focus of my work today is to try to capture the humorous and/or poignant twists of life that we all see and experience, and to reflect the warmth and charm that life’s foibles can bring.
