Notes
My creative process usually begins with an inquiry and construction of original ideas through collage and sketches. Multiple perspective grids and a distorted sense of depth provide the foundation for unifying the parts that make up the finished work. The image illustrates the lives, labor history, and controversy surrounding Buraku people (Buraku means Segregated section. Nowadays, Roji is a preferred reference.) in Japan. Roji people were skilled artisans who worked in 'what was once considered to be unclean trades" such as leather processors, slaughterhouses, and funeral homes during the Shogun era in Japan. Through the social hardships, Roji people left their legacy as resilient, strong, and adaptive, who contributed to Japan’s post WWII industrious era. This series is not about making a political statement, but rather a visual narrative of human stories seen universally throughout world history.
